Major supermarkets commit to Campaign
Tuesday, 17 July 2007
Along with my latest update from Sepilok I received a report from Nature Alert - www.naturealert.org and www.born-to-be-wild.org - on the devastation & slaughtering that is occurring due to Palm Oil Plantations.

Along with the report I was sent a number of postcards to send to supermarkets in the UK. These cards asked the companies to join the RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) and to ensure that the Palm Oil used in their products is Orangutan Friendly and comes from non - destructive sources.

I sent a card to each of the following, Tesco, Sainsburys, ASDA, Waitrose, Morrisons and the Co-op.

A week later I received a letter from ASDA, who confirm that they are members of the RSPO, in fact they were the first major UK retailer to join. By November of this year a pilot project presently being trailed by the RSPO should be in place. This will allow ASDA and other members to source their Palm Oil from companies that follow the RSPO Principles and Criteria on sustainable Palm Oil.

The following week a reply from Waitrose was sent, they too are doing whatever they can to address the situation. They are members of the RSPO and are one of the very few organisations that individually name all of the oils in their ingredients - they don´t just give the term “Vegetable Oils”.

Together with the RSPO they are devising systems to trace Palm Oil in consumer products back to the original plantation so that once Palm Oil certified as Sustainable is available, their suppliers can purchase it.

What we need now is for the rest of the supermarkets and other organisations to follow in Asda and Waitroses´ footsteps!

Please help us try to achieve this by signing the Petition attached to the website. I will then forward this to these people in the hope that they too will join the fight to stop the destruction and slaughtering.
